Based in San Francisco, California, Tenaya Insurance Services was established in 2011 by Sarah Smith, a longtime insurance agent specializing in life insurance solutions.

Sarah Smith started her career as a project manager, working on multi-million dollar projects with Bayer HealthCare and Washington Mutual, amongst others. Then, in 2009, she made the transition to insurance, initially working as a captive agent for an insurance provider, dealing exclusively in that company's insurance offerings.
Ultimately, Sarah transitioned to an independent venture, working with a mentor that guided her through the transition from a captive agent to a broker. She feels that one of the most valuable things this mentor taught her in addition to the industry, products, and solutions, was how to be the kind of agent that her clients need and deserve.
Today, Tenaya Insurance Services works with over 100 different insurance companies, which provides clients with a far higher level of service.

When Sarah Smith founded Tenaya Insurance Services in 2011, she set out to establish a different kind of insurance company; one that placed the clients first, evaluating their needs and finding the best insurance product for the job – not the other way around, as is typical in the industry.
“We work to establish a long-term relationship with each client. We're not an insurance mill, giving thousands of clients the exact same policy, even if it's not a good fit. Sarah Smith has been working in the insurance industry since 2009. She has earned many awards, including earning recognition as a top 25 producer amongst the firm's more than 12,000 agents nationwide. Prior to this, she worked as a project manager, which allowed her to develop her analytical skills (amongst many others) in a way that continues to benefit her clients today.
While Sarah and her company, Tenaya Insurance Services, are based in San Francisco, her clientele spans the nation thanks to the power of the internet.

TENAYA: WHAT'S IN A NAME?
At Tenaya Insurance Services, we're frequently asked about the company name and its meaning.
The word “Tenaya” is a Native American word meaning “to dream.” The word was first used by the Ahwahnechee people of the Yosemite Valley in California. It was also the name of one of the tribe's leader's, Chief Tenaya. An alpine lake in Yosemite National Park – Lake Tenaya – still bears the chief's name today.
We felt this name and its underlying meaning was very apt and significant because that's precisely what the right insurance solutions can enable you to do – to dream and live life to the fullest.
Tenaya is also a nod to the company founder's Native American Heritage with the Ahwahnechee people. In fact, the Ahwahnechee people were led by Chief Tenaya, who passed away in 1853.
The Ahwahnechee people lived in Yosemite Valley – the area that is now Yosemite National Park – until most were destroyed by a virulent illness. The survivors of the Ahwahnechee people ultimately merged with the Mono Lake Paiutes.
Years later, Chief Tenaya led the Ahwahnechee people back to the Yosemite Valley, where they re-established their tribe. The Ahwahnechee people were regarded as fierce fighters who were often at odds with the Miwok tribes who also lived in the Yosemite Valley.
Sadly, in the early 1850s, the Ahwahnechee people were forcibly relocated by the State of California, which moved the Native American people from the Yosemite Valley to the Fresno Reservation. Following the Chief's death in 1853, the remaining Ahwahnechee people dispersed to the Mono Lake area and beyond.
